The AI Job Boom

Last updated 15 April 2026 Published 11 March 2025

AI is no longer a niche skill - it's becoming a core competency.

Since late 2022, AI-related job postings have increased by 68%, while overall tech job postings have fallen by 17% and general IT roles have declined by 27%.

The trend is clear: businesses are cutting traditional tech roles and prioritising AI talent.

Which industries are leading?

According to the latest CompTIA and UMD-LinkUp reports, five sectors account for 89% of AI job postings:

Professional & Technical Services (25%) - AI consulting, automation, and advanced analytics
Information (24%) - AI-driven content, cybersecurity, and software development
Manufacturing (16%) - Process automation, predictive maintenance, and quality control
Finance & Insurance (14%) - Risk modelling, fraud detection, and personalisation
Retail (9%) - Supply chain optimisation, customer insights, and AI-powered e-commerce

What does this mean for businesses?

AI is no longer just an experiment - it's shaping competitive advantage. Businesses need to:

Assess AI readiness - Identify where AI can improve efficiency or create new opportunities.
Build internal AI capabilities - Upskill employees and hire strategically instead of relying solely on outsourcing.
Rethink hiring criteria - Many AI-related roles don't require a four-year degree. Expanding recruitment pipelines can help bring in fresh talent.
Prioritise AI in decision-making - AI is affecting every sector. Companies that fail to integrate it will fall behind.

The bigger picture

Open-source AI models are accelerating this shift. AI tools are more accessible than ever, and companies that don't move quickly to integrate them risk losing their competitive edge.

How is your business preparing for AI adoption? Let's discuss.

Don't bet your strategy on what AI can't do

Here's a bet I see businesses make without realising they're making it. They look at what AI can't do today, they build their plans around those limits, and they treat those limits as fixed. It's a quiet bet, and it's a losing one. It loses because the thing you're betting against keeps moving. Two forces […]

The best AI work is boring

The AI work I trust most is the work that looks boring. There's no clever prompt, no amazing inspiration, no surprises. It does the same boring thing every time, and that is exactly why I trust it. Most people reach for AI's cleverness first and its dependability second. I strongly believe you need it the […]

The most useful AI works when you're not watching

The most useful AI works while you're not watching - and the barrier usually isn't a cleverer model, it's permission. A plain-English guide to the Permission Ladder: how much autonomy you give an AI, the access it costs, and why onboarding it like a new hire is the right mental model.

AI just came for design

Anthropic just launched Claude Design yesterday. Before I say what I think about the tool, I want to tell you about a story I read earlier in the week from BEFORE the launch. The story came from a designer called Nurkhon, writing on Substack. A product manager walked into a meeting, typed one sentence into […]
